In 1972, the parishioners of St. Paul’s on the Green, Norwalk, CT, founded Christian Community Action (CCA) to serve the needy in the Norwalk area by providing food, clothing, furniture and counseling services.
In 1974, to meet the increasing needs for its services, CCA became incorporated as an IRS 501 (c) (3) non-profit, non-sectarian organization and moved from St. Paul’s Church and became housed by NEON (Norwalk Economic Opportunity, Now), the community antipoverty agency located at 33 South Main Street, South Norwalk, CT. Its mission is to provide food, furniture and financial assistance to the residents in Norwalk and the surrounding communities.
In the fall of 1982, CCA moved along with NEON to the new South Norwalk Community Center building located at 98 South Main Street, where we are situated today.
Our location in the South Norwalk Community Center places us in the “heart” of the area where most of our clients reside. This location is also the headquarters for NEON and many other social services agencies, such as Americares, which help the needy.
As unemployment amongst the poor has increased, the number of families and individuals served has also increased dramatically. Currently, we serve approximately 100 families/individuals per week.
Today our food program remains the heart of our agency’s work. We serve approximately between 17,000 and 20,000 meals per month, approaching now about 200,000 meals per year. Over the years, we have increased our services to those who find themselves in crisis situations. Please go to the section on Programs to read about all of CCA’s services.
CCA is an agency that relies on its cadre of loyal and hard-working volunteers, and together with its small staff, we are able to fulfill our mission here in South Norwalk. Please go to the section on Volunteers to see how you can help as well.
